"storyline": "Battleship Potemkin will be screened with the original soundtrack by Neil Tennant and Chris Lowe, and performed by the Pet Shop Boys. This masterpiece of prog-rock was first performed at a concert in London's Trafalgar Square, and later at the British Film institute, as part of the Meltdown Festival curated by Yoko Ono.\r\n\r\nAfter the success of Strike (1924), Sergei Eisenstein was commissioned by the Soviet government to make a film commemorating the uprising of 1905. Eisenstein's scenario, boiled down from what was to have been a multipart epic of the occasion, focussed on the crew of the battleship Potemkin. Fed up with the extreme cruelties of their officers and their maggot-ridden meat rations, the sailors stage a violent mutiny. This, in turn, sparks an abortive citizens' revolt against the Czarist regime. The film's centerpiece is staged on the Odessa Steps, where the Czar's Cossacks methodically shoot down rioters and innocent bystanders alike. Known as \"The Odessa Steps sequence,\" this is often considered the most famous scene ever filmed; it is certainly one of the most imitated, perhaps most overtly by Brian De Palma in The Untouchables (1987)."

"storyline": "A never-named young woman (Ruan Lingyu) works as a prostitute to support herself and her baby son Shuiping. One night, fleeing from a police street sweep, she hides in the room of a gambler named Zhang (Zhang Zhizhi). When he suggests she stay the night with him for not betraying her to the police, she agrees. Later, however, he and two of his pals show up at her place. He makes it clear that he considers her his property. The woman attempts to flee, but Zhang tracks her down and frightens her by claiming to have sold Shuiping to punish her. Zhang returns the child, but he has made his point; she realizes she cannot protect her son from him and gives in. However, she manages to hide some of her earnings behind a loose brick in her wall.\r\n\r\nWhen Shuiping is about 5 or 6, she enrolls him in a school. Soon, however, the other parents learn that Shuiping's mother is a prostitute, and complain to the school. The old principal visits the mother to find out if there is any truth to the accusations. She admits she is a prostitute, but upon seeing her genuine love of her child, the principal realizes that he cannot penalize Shuiping for his mother's unfortunate situation. However, he is unable to persuade the rest of the staff to be lenient, so he resigns and Shuiping is expelled.\r\n\r\nThe mother decides to take both of them away to somewhere where nobody knows them. She takes the brick out of her wall to get her money, but Zhang has already found her hiding place, and the money is gone. She confronts him and demands the money back, and when he tells her he has already spent the money, she hits him on the head with a bottle, killing him.\r\n\r\nShe is sentenced to 12 years in prison and Shuiping is sent to an orphanage. The school principal comes to visit her, and he tells her that he will take care of Shuiping. She asks him to tell him that his mother is dead, so he does not have to suffer the shame of having a mother like her. The movie ends with her imagining a bright future for Shuiping."

Adapted from a classic novel by Mai Muengderm, The Scar is a romantic tragedy that revolves around a young couple, Kwan and Riam. In the fields of Bang Kapi, the star-crossed lovers make a vow at the shrine of the banyan tree to love each other forever. But their romance is shattered because Riam’s father, a rival of Kwan’s, objects their relationship and sends Riam away to Bangkok to live with an aristocratic lady, who later adopts the girl as her daughter. When Riam returns to visit her sick mother in Bang Kapi, Kwan finds out that his lover is no longer the same person he once knew.\r\nThe Scar was released in 1977 and became the highest-grossing Thai film at that time. In 1981, the film won the Montgolfiere d’Or Award at the Festival des Three Continents in Nantes, and was later shown in many international film festivals.\r\n\r\nThe Film Archive (Public Organization) carried out the restoration from the original camera and sound negatives preserved at the Film Archive. Since the color of the negatives was severely deteriorated and had cyan dominant hue, the color correction used a vintage print as the reference. The digital restoration and cleaning took 2,300 hours and was completed in 2018 by L’Immagine Ritrovata."
